“Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” 1 Corinthians 1:20b. Think about the wisdom of the world, this modern world. Is anything really any better than say, any time period in the past? We have the same old problems. We are more comfortable and supposedly so great. Ever noticed man’s wisdom, how it’s nice to sit around and talk. Think of all the talk shows, from daytime talk shows to politics to sports. What can they do? Nothing. Have they ever really solved man’s biggest problem? Sin. We need the forgiveness of sin and man’s wisdom could never do that. With man’s wisdom we have no change, just more sophistication of man’s philosophy.

Thanksgiving is once a year, we get together with family and friends and remember a day that was started by the Pilgrims and Indians. Should Thanksgiving be a once a year event? Today, there doesn’t seem to be a culture that is real thankful. The Bible has much to say about thankfulness, so let us check it out.
Truth, what is it? Is there such a claim to have truth? Truth today is relative or at least not for certain. People will say you can believe what truth you want to and I can believe what I want to, but I want to ask this one question. How can everything everybody believes (existence, religion, science, etc.) be all true? In Bob Dylan’s song, “Things have changed,” he said, “All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie.” The word “truth” is not very certain and has been very tainted. Let us test and see what Jesus says about truth. First, Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. “(John 14:6) That is a bold statement, either Jesus is crazy or He is true. What other statements did Jesus state about truth? I can only list a few to lead you to others in the Bible. “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32) “….for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” (John 18:37b) According to the Webster’s American 1828 Dictionary truth is the conformity to fact or reality, true state of facts or things, conformity of words to thoughts (moral truth), honesty, exactness, etc. Statements like “you can believe whatever you want” are not rational, not everything is true. Most people, even skeptics acknowledge Jesus was a real person in history. Some atheist or sceptics have tried to prove against Jesus and saw by the evidence that Jesus, the Son of God, came to this earth as a baby, died on a cross and rose again. (e.g., Lee Strobel -The Case for Christ, Josh McDowell -The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict). What is so important about the truth of Jesus being born, living a perfect life of obedience, dying and rising again? The truth is, you and I are sinners before a holy God. Romans 3:23, Isaiah 59:2 The Bible says, Jesus is the only one who can save us from our sins. John 3:16, Acts 4:12, Romans 6:23. Maybe you don’t believe the Bible; Jesus affirmed the Bible. Mark 12:26, Mathew 19:4. I would challenge those that are skeptics or don’t believe the Bible for the mere fact that you don’t want to. “This is the verdict: Light (Jesus) has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” John 3:18. The reality or truth is we are all going to die. What do you think is going to happen after we die? Do you have wishful thinking that you are going to heaven? Nothing happens, or cease to exist? “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”(John 3:36) We have all broken God’s law. Truthfully examine yourself against the Ten Commandments. Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen something? Blasphemed God’s name (or Jesus)? God is a God of love but He is also a just God and sin must be punished. Most people think they will be saved because they are a “good” person. But the Bible says we are saved by faith in Jesus. (Ephesians 2:8-9) If a person was guilty of a crime (i.e., stealing), would a just judge let him or her go because they said they were a “good person”. God had to punish sin and for that punished His own Son on the cross. Jesus took the sin of the world of those who believe in Him. What does it mean to believe in Jesus? Over and over in the Bible it says to repent. “I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish” repent; to be sorry for sin, hate it, forsake it and turn from sin. Let Jesus be Lord of your life. (Romans 10:9-10) Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”(John 11:25-26) Once again, Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) If Jesus never rose from the dead, this statement would be ludicrous and not true. However, He did. Jesus is not just a way, a truth, or a life. Jesus is the only way, the only truth, the only life. Jesus is the only eternal truth. Can you handle the truth? Paul Selby
